Frequently Asked Questions
What all happens during each session?
A mix of different things: guided community conversations, art exhibitions, interactive performances, and more, all planned around a common theme. Between sessions, there will also be skill shares, book clubs, and study groups, for those who want to go even deeper.
How do I get involved?
You can participate in individual sessions, or attend the whole series. To get started, please fill out our interest form!
What are the themes?
We are still in the planning stages, but we are looking to explore at least ten juxtapositions (comparisons) between 2024 in Parable of the Sower and 2024 in Philadelphia, as well as getting at our larger goals of cultivating community self-determination. Think material things like food, water, energy, and housing, but also relational themes, like governance and care.
What are the goals of Earthseeding: New Worlds?
To bring together artists, craftspeople, researchers, writers, thinkers, planners, people of all kinds of backgrounds together to envision and then make actionable plans for a better future.
Who is Octavia Butler?
Octavia Estelle Butler (1947 – 2006) was a prolific and award-winning science fiction writer. Her work has inspired generations of other writers and thinkers, as well as a huge body of research and real world projects interrogating the status quo and exploring possibilities for new worlds.
Who’s behind the curtain?
The Earthseeding: New Worlds concept was developed by Kermit O, a Philly-born researcher and organizer. He brought his ideas to Malaika Gilpin of One Art Community Center, and together with members of the team, the first seeds were planted.
